About the society

Staffed by second years, the Philosophy Society aims to find a space between the academic and the social. We host lectures by academics from around the country, and also run regular film screenings. Our parties in the department's own bar are the stuff of legend.

Becoming a Member

Join PhilSoc at any point in the year at the Student Union - membership costs £5, and also puts you on the PhilSoc mailing list.

Members join from across the college to attend our lectures, and find themselves welcomed by all.

Non-members are also very welcome. There is a 50p honesty box on the way out from our events. But we don't keep records!

Route to the present

Today's PhilSoc was born just a few years ago, and was formed in response to the vacuum left by its aging predecessor. It attracted support throughout the department from the start, and as its social side has brought students and the whole department together, its lectures have brought together local members with members from across the college. Each president has run the society with their own ideas, but at its core PhilSoc continues as a part of the department run by undergraduates, dimming neither with their lack of time, nor with the graduation of past members. Led by its president Vlad Cadar, the society is forever indebted to its founder Paul Giladi, as well as Rory O'Connell, Lucy Campbell, Claire Field and Verena Fritzenwenger, who have led admirably over the intervening years.
